Immigrant Students

What is an Immigrant Student?

Immigrant children, or youth, are individuals who are between 3 and 21 years of age who were not born in any of the United States and who have not been attending one or more schools in any of the United States for more than three full academic years.

A group of smiling elementary school children stand together in a classroom.

Carthage R-9 School District, through a federal grant, provides services to immigrant students.  We believe that active parent/community involvement is essential to ensure student academic success.  The following is a list of opportunities/activities for our district.

Parent Advisory Council

PAC meetings are conducted at least twice a year.  Their purpose is to advise parents of services available to students, to encourage parent involvement (in home and school educational activities), and to promote connections with other immigrant families and relationships with school liaisons.

Monitor Student Progress

Liaisons check in on student academic progress, bridge communication between school and home, and find  resources to help students succeed in school, including securing school supplies and finding appropriate academic tutors.

Home Visits

Liaisons conduct home visits to encourage parent participation in their child’s education and build relationships with families.

Workshops

Throughout the school year, liaisons offer a variety of parent workshops to help familiarize parents with school policies, school systems, and other educational topics.

Applying for College

If a student needs help completing a college application, please contact Rhonda Wyrsch to set up an appointment.

College Meetings

Various colleges send personnel to give information regarding enrollment application, scholarships, and activities related to the college or university.

College Visits

We provide 1-2 college visits throughout the school year.  Senior students take priority.  There are various different colleges with which we have relationships, that offer assistance regardless of status.

FAFSA Application

Contact Rhonda Wyrsch to set up an appointment to fill out the application.  Priority deadline is October through February 1st of each year.

Upcoming Meeting

Dear Parents:

You are invited to an informational night for your child.  This invitation is for the service of immigrant students, recently enrolled in Carthage R-9 schools.

Our purpose is to connect immigrant students with community resources when needed.

Your attendance and participation are important, especially for those who have little experience with schools and teachers, or with services for newly-enrolled immigrant students.

The event will take place on March 25, at 5:30pm, at Bamboo Garden Restaurant:

104 N Garrison Ave, Carthage, MO 64836

If we can help your student with some of the things in the attached brochure, please come to the meeting.  If you cannot attend, you can contact us by phone.  Our presentation will be in Spanish.

Please RSVP by text or phone.

Thank you very much for your attention.
